Mess kit

Since we do a lot of camping/overnight events, this Outdoor MealKit by Light My Fire should come in handy. It's got everything that you typically find in a mess kit, and a clever design. 6 pieces, including spill-proof cup and matching spork. Also pictured is the MealKit harness that allows you to attach it to a belt or backpack.

Some other essentials: a stainless steel water bottle, by DAJO Adventure Gear - has a carabiner built into the top; the Swedish Firesteel; and some other species of spork - left-right - Titanium Spork, regular Spork, and Spork XM - slightly larger than regular spork and better for getting to the bottom of MRE pouches.

So I got this stuff with camping in mind. What you see here is a "mini" fire bowl that folds up like those vegetable steamers that you find in every kitchen (but no one every uses), and a little grill sized to match. The grill disassembles into basically a pile of metal sticks and they all shove into the larger of the metal tubes, so this stuff packs up very small, which is great for backpacking.

Also pictured above is the Swedish Firesteel, which works even when wet. I'm definitely putting one of these into my survival kit/bug-out bag, because its good to have more than one means of building a fire.

World News Network 4/22/09 - Liberian Warlord, General Siaka Roosevelt Jackson, has consolidated forces near the town of Lago in Sierra Leone. Jackson is far from beaten and fresh troops being are being trucked into Sierra Leone along his supply routes. Unlike other African Warlords, Jackson has put the substantial resources at his disposal to use in hiring highly skilled western mercenaries as the shock troops of his army. African militia troops are used primarily to safeguard his supply routes and control the Liberian border, and Jackson's wealth continues to attract experienced western mercenaries in his bid to conquer neighboring Sierra Leone.

Despite sanctions and threats of action, the UN Security Council remains divided on how to address the situation in West Africa. At this time a peacekeeping force of US troops, augmented by French Foreign Legionnaires, has set up checkpoints to monitor and observe Jackson's forces and prevent him from resuming offensive operations.

Publically denouncing the UN and US hesitancy of direct involvement in West African politics, a consortium of European, American and South African corporations with business interests in the region have begun to hire additional security forces from private military contractors. Spokespersons explain that the build up of contractors is to safeguard their regional interests, but WNN military analysts suspect that these corporations are quietly building a military force capable of offensive operations against General Jackson should the UN and US continue to delay direct action.

Weekend airsofting

It was a great day for airsofting, and I had a great time. The turnout was great, the field was challenging, the game was dynamic, and another remarkable thing was the unprecedented number of women at the game: at least seven out of roughly 70 players total (that's a guesstimate). I finally, really got to play with my CA M15 XM177, after it was upgraded by Amped Airsoft. What an amazing difference in the performance level! I am very happy with it.

Medic pouches

One thing that's good to have on hand no matter where you are or what you are doing is a first-aid kit. I've always carried a few essentials with me, like bandages, ibuprofen, &etc, and I've needed to use them on a number of occasions, just going about my day. So when we (D.I. and I) put together these medic kits, I had practicality in mind. Basically, we stocked our MOLLE medic pouches that we'll wear out in the field, with all the stuff we might need (and know how to use).

The large MultiCam pouch on the left mounts on to a tear-away velcro panel, so it can be quickly removed from your vest. The pouch on the right is slightly smaller and the front flap just folds down to provide access to the contents.

Contains an instant ice pack, adhesive bandages of different shapes and sizes, packets of antibiotic ointment, hand sanitizer, gloves, a bottle of disinfectant spray for cleaning wounds, gauze bandages and medical tape, scissors, some packaged single doses of medications like Tylenol, Advil, etc. Check the travel-size aisle at the pharmacy for these types of convenience items. You could easily stock a medic pouch with the contents of a pre-packaged first-aid kit, but in that case, you are paying for the packaging. You can get more value by buying your supplies in bulk, or as D.I. and I did, we purchased full-size supplies and divided them up between our kits, and we had some extras left over for restocking later. This is just a starting point, and I'm sure we'll make some updates and changes with experience.

Is slightly smaller and doesn't hold as much stuff, so contains a subset of what is in the larger pouch.

According to one of the books I'm reading on building survival kits, the minimum recommendation for the smallest kit includes butterfly bandages, antibiotic ointment, and alcohol pads. Whatever else you want to add would depend on the situations you need it for, and the number of people who might need it.
